Ketogenic Diet Big Help for Tough Mental Health Challenges

A study by Dr. Albert Danan, a psychiatrist in Toulouse, France, found that a special diet called the ketogenic diet could help people with serious mental illness including depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia.

Danan became interested in the ketogenic diet when he saw firsthand how it helped a member of his family who was dealing with seizures and autistic behavior. So, he created a program at his local hospital where patients could try this diet under his supervision.

Here's what he did: He put 31 of his patients—all of whom had severe mental health challenges, in addition to metabolic disorders like type 2 diabetes, obesity and hypertension—on the ketogenic diet instead of their usual hospital food. The low carb/high fat diet served as a reset button for the body’s metabolism.

The results were promising: Nearly everyone who stuck with the diet for more than two weeks saw improvements in their mental health. Many of the patients were able to reduce their medication and several were even discharged from the hospital.

The diet also helped with other health problems like high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and excess weight. Almost everyone lost weight, which is often challenging when taking certain medications.

This study is important because it's the first time so many patients with different mental health issues have tried this diet in a hospital. While it's not a perfect study, it shows that the ketogenic diet could be a big help for people with tough mental health problems.
