Natural Awakenings Northwest Florida

Taking Back Time With Holistic Health –September 2015

Who are you calling old? I can honestly say even at 53, I laugh when I think of the Beatles song, When I’m Sixty-Four, which talks about knitting and gardening; “Will you still need me, will you still feed me?” I don’t think so! We have recently heard reports that 60 is the new 40, and like the seniors I know, most aren’t sitting by the fireplace, weeding their gardens or even contemplating retirement. In fact, AARP recently reported, one in 21 that are 50+ plan to start their own business. Just this past summer, I enjoyed reading about the more than 10,000 fierce athletes that competed in the National Senior Games.

As Natural Awakenings consulted with the experts on the generational trend “not aging,” they revealed how holistic wellness plays a huge role in the fastest-growing segment of our population, the centenarians.

Our “Ageless Being” feature article comes just in time, and is well aligned with the Wellness Rocks functional medicine course that is just one of the programs provided through the Center for Lifelong Learning, an organization that offers seniors a chance to learn new things. Scott and I have facilitated this program for four years now and continue to witness, experience and enjoy the life and energy it offers the participating super seniors.

This year’s course brings together the top experts in our healthy living community to present cutting-edge information and lifestyle changes that benefit all. The weekly presentations on Friday mornings provide an opportunity to learn what functional medicine is and how it is different—instead of just soothing the symptoms, it combines the most progressive science with ancient methods to identify and eradicate the root cause of chronic disease. Simple and inspiring lifestyle changes can make us stay healthy and feel good enough to complete any bucket list.

This year, you’re invited to join us for a thorough Introduction to Functional Medicine at 8:30 a.m., September 18, in the Auditorium at UWF/Northwest Florida Campus, in Fort Walton Beach. This free event provides a take a closer look at just one of the programs offered by the Center for Lifelong Learning. Please RSVP at WellnessRocksNaturally.com.

Hope to see you there,

Daralyn
