Natural Awakenings Northwest Florida

Food and Drink Event Supports Threatened Sea Turtles

In response to reports that some 800 green sea turtle nests along northern Palm Beach County beaches were lost to Hurricane Matthew, Pereira Produce & Health and Navarre Living Yoga are partnering with 7-year-old Kaitlyn Pereira to raise funds for the Navarre Beach Sea Turtle Conservation Center. On November 9 from 3 to 7 p.m., they will be selling lavender lemonade, spiced apple cider, gluten-free and sugar-free cupcakes and other treats, as well as sea turtle-themed art projects and paintings. “We really, really hope that we can help these beautiful creatures,” Kaitlyn says. “We hope many, many people stop by Navarre Living Yoga to help.”

While green sea turtles are no longer an endangered species in Florida, they are federally classified as threatened. Given this status and the recent storm destruction of turtle habitats throughout Florida, Kaitlyn says she decided that she wanted to make a difference for the turtles by raising donations for the conservation center, which educates children and adults about the dangers sea turtles face as humans increasingly encroach upon their habitats. The center’s educational programs focus on turtle rescue, keeping beaches free of litter and reducing light pollution that keeps baby turtles from finding the ocean.

“The drink and food options we’ll have for sale will include the use of essential oils for a delightful culinary experience that is completely allergy friendly,” says Kaitlyn’s mother, Diana Pereira.
