Four Therapies, One Goal: Easing Chronic Pain

Mar 04, 2017 06:36AM ● By Barbara Bruni

The movement therapies Pilates and Gyrotonic Method and the manual therapies myofascial release (MFR) and structural integration (SI) all work toward a common goal: addressing the underlying causes of chronic pain. Better yet, they work beautifully together to effect whole-body health and relieve myriad painful conditions.

The Gyrotonic Method, which is practiced in group or private classes under the instruction of a qualified Gyrotonic teacher, involves carefully crafted movement sequences that improve balance, efficiency, strength and flexibility.

Pilates Core Training applies state-of-the-art exercise science and biomechanics to the century-old Pilates method, which strengthens the entire body while correcting improper body alignment and mechanics. The updated exercises are safer and more effective, emphasizing the natural curves of the spine.

MFR involves gentle, sustained pressure applied to restrictions in the fascia (whole-body connective tissue) that don’t show up on standard tests like x-rays and CT scans. Trauma, poor posture or inflammation can cause fascia to bind down, putting excessive pressure on nerves, muscles, blood vessels, bones or organs. MFR reduces pain and restores function.

SI combines soft-tissue manipulation and awareness of movement to release physical restrictions while increasing strength, adaptability and resilience, bringing all the body’s parts into smooth, coordinated functionality.

These four therapies work synergistically with each other, as their main intent is to help an individual experience an optimal way of moving. MFR and SI release the “straight jacket” of tight connective tissues that cause imbalances; Pilates and Gyrotonic continue to balance the body and help it strengthen into its new alignment.
