Adventure-Based Teen Counseling in Panama City Beach

A new Emerald Coast organization, New Wave Youth Services, offers adventure-based counseling for teens who are at risk for or recovering from substance dependency. Its individual, family and group outings are designed to harness the therapeutic and restorative powers of nature, says founder Leah Gunter.

The organization operates from two locations in Panama City Beach, offering two-hour outings Monday through Friday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

“Our adventures are intended to be challenging and engaging,” Gunter says. “Right now we offer paddle boarding, hiking and yoga and guided meditation, with hopes to expand in the near future.”

The idea is to give teens a place to have fun without drugs or alcohol, she says. “This will help create a community resource for teens and their families so that the teens can maintain their sobriety and have something exciting to do without using. We also offer help to family members and friends; we teach them how to take care of themselves and how to help their loved one who is at risk or struggling with a substance dependency.”
