Natural Awakenings Northwest Florida

Health Brief: The Forgotten Superfruit with a Future

May 30, 2025 06:00AM ● By Gary L Grier

Long before the term “superfood” was a supermarket marketing buzzword, generations of African American families in Northeast Florida harvested the golden bounty of the Pindo palm—also known as the jelly palm—for its rich, sweet dates bursting with nutrition and ancestral pride.

Often mistaken for mere ornamentals, these palmettos yield fruit that rivals the nutritional punch of better-known imports. Pindo dates are high in beta-carotene, potassium, fiber and vitamin C—comparable to levels in oranges. Research from Mount Sinai confirms that beta-carotene is a powerful antioxidant that converts safely into vitamin A, supporting immune health, vision, and skin function while defending the body against oxidative stress linked to heart disease, cancer and neurodegenerative conditions.

While many of these fruits go uneaten, falling to the ground or being discarded in landscaping waste, they hold incredible untapped potential. Consumed raw or made into jams, juices or wine, the fruit’s flavor hints at pineapple with a coconut-like core. Brazilian studies point to uses beyond nutrition, including oil extraction and skincare applications.

This forgotten fruit, once joyfully gathered by neighborhood children and passed from parent to child, is ripe for rediscovery. Preserving this culinary and cultural tradition could mean not just honoring heritage, but unlocking a new era of regional sustainability and wellness innovation.
