Barbara Bruni, owner of Pilates Core Training, in Pensacola, has opened a second business at the same location, Barbara Bruni and Beyond, which will focus on the teaching aspect of her Pilates studio. “I love to help people get moving, pain-free, so they can enjoy their lives,” states Bruni. “But I also want to help the Pilates instructors expand their understanding and techniques, so they can give more to their clients.”

Her goal is to train new instructors, as well as teach a series of continuing education (CE) classes. “I want to work with people who want to improve their lives and are willing to take responsibility to help themselves,” she says. “I like to co-partner with people. I help you find out what you can do to help yourself.”

Bruni, who started as a massage therapist 25 years ago in Boston, where she took advantage of the many opportunities to study various alternative therapies. When she moved to Pensacola 20 years ago, she changed her career to personal training. Bruni was introduced to Pilates 13 years ago and fell in love with the benefits of Pilates and how it bridged exercise and bodywork. “Pilates for me was the missing link, and I loved how the focus was self-responsibility and body alignment,” she explains. “You come out feeling like you’ve had a great massage.” She holds comprehensive certifications from two Pilates programs that apply current research and practice in sports medicine and movement science to the principles established by the modality’s founder, Joseph Pilates. Bruni also holds a degree in exercise science and certification in Gyrotonic Expansion System and Gyrokensis.

Bruni is also a licensed massage therapist and specializes in the John Barnes' technique of myofascial release, which releases blockages in the body to allow freedom of movement and a greater capacity to strengthen and stretch. “Sometimes people have too much pain or restrictions to move, so we do the release work and then progress to gentle movement. After that, they can join a Pilates mat class or start working the equipment,” says Bruni.

Bruni hosts a local TV show, Pilates Core Training, on UWF-TV at 8:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m., Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Her Pensacola studio, located 2130 Summit Boulevard, at the Roger Scott Athletic Center, offers all levels of individual and group training using the classic Pilates equipment and group mat sessions. Spinning and yoga classes are also available there.
