Natural Awakenings Northwest Florida

Organic versus Conventional Produce

To know what we are eating, we must understand the meaning of 100% Certified Organic produce versus conventional and local produce. The term “organic” refers to the way agricultural vegetables and fruits are grown and processed. Specific requirements must be met and maintained in order for products to be labeled as USDA Organic. Crops must be grown in safe soil, have no modifications and remain separate from conventional products. Farmers are not allowed to use synthetic pesticides, bio-engineered genes (GMOs), petroleum-based fertilizers or sewage sludge-based fertilizers.

Conventionally or locally grown produce have no specific standards. Generally, local food means that it was grown close to home. This could be in our own garden, our local community, our state, our region or our country. There are no current standards or certifications needed to sell local produce, and proven, conventional produce contains many known harmful chemicals that may affect our bodies in negative ways.

If you want to be sure of what you are eating, look for the USDA label for certified organically grown produce.
