A Compassionate Approach to Brain Fitness

Dec 06, 2023 09:33AM ● By Erin Lehn

Ageless Grace, a program rooted in the transformative science of neuroplasticity, celebrates its compassionate approach to brain fitness. Pioneered by Denise Medvid of North Carolina 14 years ago, this program delves into the profound ability of the brain and central nervous system to reshape themselves through physical movement stimulation.

More than a mere fitness regimen, Ageless Grace is a nurturing embrace for the mind and body, grounded in the principles of neuroplasticity. It harmonizes 21 physical activities with the five crucial areas of the brain: strategic, memory/recall, analytical, creativity/imagination, and kinesthetic learning.

Engaging in exercises like Juicy Joints, Spelling “B”, and Rockin Rockettes—all while comfortably seated in a chair—offers a gateway for individuals of all ages to partake in this rejuvenating journey. These exercises target various facets, from joint mobility and ligament flexibility to cognitive function and creativity.

Medvid, motivated by her mother's battle with Alzheimer’s, collaborated with Duke University scientists for seven years to curate a program addressing 21 aging factors. The outcome is a unique fusion of spontaneous movements set to music, promoting the revival of old neural pathways and the creation of new ones.

Area local Sharyon Miller, a dedicated Ageless Grace Brain Health Certified Educator, encourages her students to embrace their creativity during Ageless Grace sessions. Participants are not bound by strict instructions; instead, they are empowered to invent their own moves. Music serves as a catalyst, rekindling memories and rhythm, fostering a sense of joy and engagement.

Miller, also a Silver Sneakers instructor and Laughing Yoga Coach, imparts the transformative experience at various locations, including the Gullpoint Resource Center in Pensacola and the United Methodist Church in Lillian, Alabama. Her classes, tailored for Parkinson’s patients and held at the Retreat in Pensacola, embody the ethos of Ageless Grace—empowering individuals to choose, create and joyfully embrace their unique journey to wellness.
