Letter from Publisher February 2024

Ah, February, the month that wraps us all in a cozy blanket of love, sprinkled with heart-shaped confetti and a touch of Cupid's mischief. It's Valentine's Day, the time when young scholars become undercover agents of affection, passing sweet notes and candy like tiny love ambassadors in a clandestine mission to capture the heart of their first crush. Oh, the days of blushing in secret, hoping the entire class won't decipher the code of our romantic inclinations!

As we mature, "Love Month" transforms from innocent sweethearts' capers to a high-stakes operation where bouquets, chocolates, and adorable stuffed creatures are the currency of emotional expression. And let's not forget the last-minute warriors, sweating it out to secure the perfect token of affection, be it roses, chocolates, or a plush puppy that could rival the cuteness of a thousand kittens.

Now, let's take a trip down memory lane to the roots of this love-fueled frenzy. St. Valentine's Day, originally a feast day in the Catholic calendar around 500 AD, had a dark beginning—no, not chocolate-dark, but execution-dark. Emperor Claudius II of Rome had a thing for silencing Valentines. Talk about a heart-wrenching origin story!

But wait, there's more to February than heart-shaped arrows and romantic escapades. It's also The American Heart Association's Heart Health Month. A perfect match, right? Because let's face it, without that adorable fist-sized muscle pumping away in our chests, life would be a bit, well, heartless.

Flip through the pages of our February issue, where we've enlisted the expertise of Dr. Mimi Guarneri, the superhero of Holistic Cardiology. Discover how this interventional cardiologist is changing the game at the Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine on page 26.

And for all you gym enthusiasts out there, worry not! Dive into page 34 for a dose of Homeopathy for Athletes. Lauri Grossman, DC CCH, has the lowdown on homeopathic remedies to tackle those common sports challenges and injuries. Your heart will thank you later.

Did you know that your mouth is the frontline soldier in the battle against heart disease? Page 24 spills the beans on oral health tips by Steven Masley, MD, FACN, CNS. Regular dentist trips? A small price to pay for a lifesaving mission. Even if you're as young as a love-struck schooler, take the time to check on that vital ticker.

But that's not all, folks! Our February issue is bursting with health wisdom. Meet Carol Thomas, LMT, CST, a local massage guru who spills the secrets of CranioSacral Therapy and Somato Emotional Release Therapy on page 18. Because a happy heart deserves a stress-free existence.

And for the green thumbs with a penchant for heart-healthy produce, turn to page 18. Learn how to grow Hydroponic produce at home and embrace the tower of love with a Tower Garden on page 37. Harvesting within weeks? Cupid couldn't have done it better.

So, dear reader, as February and Valentine's Day knock on your door, let love flutter in your heart and embrace heart-healthy habits. Don't be shy—share that "will you be mine" candy/card with your crush. After all, nothing warms the heart more than a sweet gesture, be it a love note or a Tower Garden in full bloom.

Cheers to love, laughter, and a hearty February!
