Acknowledging What Is Good

Oct 31, 2026 03:06PM ● By Daralyn Chase

Before the holiday lists get longer and the calendar fills up, November offers a lovely invitation: Pause long enough to notice what is already here.

A thoughtful conversation. Someone who remembers to check in. A meal prepared with care. The familiar face of a local business owner who is happy to see us. These moments may seem small, but together they give our days richness and our communities roots.

This month’s theme, “Rooted in Gratitude,” invites us to make thankfulness part of everyday life. In our feature, “Growing Our Capacity for Gratitude,” writer Megy Karydes explores the difference between feeling grateful when something wonderful happens and developing a practice we can return to when life feels less cooperative. I appreciate that distinction. Gratitude doesn’t require us to pretend everything is easy. It asks us to leave room for what is good, even when other things are difficult.

Here in Northwest Florida, many of our neighbors are still recovering from Hurricane Isaias. For those facing repairs, disruption and uncertainty, this season may feel especially challenging. Our hearts are with you. Gratitude can share space with hardship, and sometimes its simplest expression is checking on a neighbor, offering a helping hand or remembering that recovery continues long after the storm has passed.

Sometimes, that begins with noticing the people who care for us.

Our Community Spotlight, “More Than Dental Care,” introduces readers to Dr. Susan Welch and her team at Wright Parkway Dental Center in Fort Walton Beach. Their approach makes room for questions, conversation and a broader understanding of the person sitting in the dental chair. It is a reminder of how meaningful it can be to feel heard—and how fortunate we are to have local practitioners who bring such care to their work.

Elsewhere in this issue, “Building Strength for Life” explores resistance training and the role strength plays in maintaining mobility and independence as we age. “Healthy Swaps for the Holiday Table” offers inspiration for bringing nourishment to our seasonal gatherings. Both encourage us to consider how everyday choices can support the lives we want to enjoy.

For Scott and me, gratitude also means recognizing everyone who makes this magazine possible: our advertisers, contributors, distribution partners and you, our readers. Each time you pick up an issue, share an article or visit a business you discovered in these pages, you help sustain a local network of knowledge, connection and care.

As Thanksgiving approaches, perhaps we can make our thanks a little more specific—and say it out loud. Tell someone what their kindness meant. Let a favorite local business know why you keep returning. Notice something ordinary that would be deeply missed if it were gone.

There is much to appreciate here in Northwest Florida. Thank you for being part of it.

With gratitude,
