New Wellness Clinic Takes ‘High-Touch, High-Tech’ Approach

Awaken Functional Medicine, a new wellness clinic in Niceville specializing in functional and anti-aging medicine, takes a “high-touch, high-tech” approach to health care. Owner and medical director Amy Drab—a physician assistant with more than 23 years’ experience in family practice, OB/GYN, urgent care, emergency medicine, and functional medicine—says this emerging approach combines traditional, hands-on medical care with the advantages of state-of-the-art medical technology.

As one of the ~1,500 certified practitioners through the Institute for Functional Medicine, Drab provides in depth analysis addressing the root cause of symptoms using lifestyle modifications and the principles of functional medicine.

“My passion and confidence were born and grounded through my experience healing a family member through functional medicine where the allopathic medical community failed to heal the person,” she says. “Today’s health care is often dictated by insurance companies and treats the symptom and not the core issue. With functional medicine, you’re not just a patient. You’re a unique person.”

She says she gained valuable experience working in the prestigious Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine, where she collaborated with some of the most prominent thought leaders and practitioners in the field such as Dr. Mark Hyman. She also incorporated a functional medicine approach in other local practices as well.

“My passion is to educate patients regarding the root causes of their health issues, inspire them to make the changes needed, and then empower them with the necessary tools to be an active participant in the healing process. This is truly where healing begins,” she says. For this reason, Amy has incorporated education tools such as medical infographics to communicate complex concepts and online on-demand education opportunities through her “Awaken Academy” learning platform. She also utilizes the services of a dietitian and health coach to assist patients in their healing journey.

Her approach to care is evident from the first appointment, which takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes.

“We start with a very detailed assessment and spend time with the patient, listening and learning about the individual,” she says. “If you’re sick and tired of feeling sick and tired, we can help you discover the root cause of your symptoms and make a plan to awaken the best version of you.”
